Background
I am a Consultant Psychiatrist currently working in Youth North Team, supporting young people aged 12-25 in the community. I also work clinically in functional gut disorders. I have a sub-specialisation in structured psychotherapies, and provides gut-focused CBT to clients with functional gut disorders.
I also hold academic appointments as a Senior Research Fellow at Deakin University, a clinical academic at Barwon Health and Psychiatric Clinical Lead at the Food & Mood Centre.
I completed my training in psychiatry at the Austin Hospital, and went on to pursue a clinical academic career, completing my PhD in 2024.
For my PhD, I developed and led a pilot randomised controlled trial investigating the use of Faecal Microbiota Transplants (FMT) for Major Depressive Disorder. The study was the first RCT of FMT for a mental health disorder, and my work was recently featured in The Australian Story (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-07-28/gut-instinct-jane-dudley/105583270) .
Research Focus
My current research is primarily focused on the gut-brain-axis, and lifestyle psychiatry translation. I am passionate about translating the robust evidence base for lifestyle psychiatry into clinical practice, and am currently leading a number of projects in this theme. I also continue to be actively involved in Faecal Microbiota Transplants (FMT) research and am currently a Chief Investigator on two MRFF-funded studies of FMT. The first is investigating the use of FMT for the psychological sequelae of long COVID, and the second in chronic pelvic pain.
Awards & Achievements
- My novel work into FMT for mental health conditions has attracted significant media interest. I have been interviewed on The Australian Story, print media (New Scientist, The New York Times, ABC News Online) and radio (Triple R, ABC Radio). My work was also featured in Professor Gordon Parker’s book, A Gut Mood Solution.
